BOURKE STREET TERRACE

BOURKE STREET TERRACE
An addition to an original Surry Hills terrace where the existing facade’s integrity is maintained. The existing plan of the ground floor is liberated to allow a continuous sequence from the front of the house to the outdoor space at the rear.
A delicate self supported folded steel plate stair is designed to maximise the openness of the space and the visual connection to the outdoors, with a large overhead skylight over this central stair further distributing light throughout. The stair provides a major point of visual interest for the entire space.
A vertically dramatic zinc framed picture window terminates this sequence framing a view to the rear courtyard.
The upper level has been made more generous with an operable wall which allows for flexibility of use for the third bedroom. An operable mechanical privacy screen to the rear bedroom completes the contemporary look of the new addition.
